The chromium market continues to be largely driven by the South Africa-China duo, with a significant portion of South Africa's chrome ore and ferrochrome exports destined for China.

In June 2024, around 90% of South Africa's Cr ore exports and 71% of its FeCr exports were directed to China, with 49% and 41% of these exports, respectively, rerouted through the port of Maputo in Mozambique to navigate around blockages encountered at South African ports. Mozambique is emerging as a crucial platform for South African commodities' export.
