[Ferro-alloys.com]:SAP SE and Salzgitter AG are deepening their long-standing business relationship.

The aim is to jointly advance the digital transformation of the German steel producer and thus set the course for climate-friendly steel production. By switching to the latest SAP technology and components from SAP's sustainability portfolio, the companies are preparing to achieve this goal together.

Resource-saving management is one of the greatest challenges for the steel industry: by 2045 it must reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 100 percent. This represents a Herculean task for the companies concerned. Hardly any other industry emits so much carbon dioxide (CO 2) from like the steel industry. In the Salzgitter AG iron and steel works alone, around eight million tons of CO 2 are produced every year - this corresponds to around one percent of the entire Federal Republic of Germany's CO 2 footprint. 'In order to counteract this, with our Strategy 2030 we are making the topic of sustainability the core of everything we do,' says Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG . The group wants to achieve the decarbonization of its crude steel production by 2033 - and further expand its good market position in the green steel market. The first climate-neutral steel is to be produced in Salzgitter by the end of 2025.

The company is therefore now working even more closely with SAP on the digital transformation of its processes. Salzgitter AG had already initiated the group-wide switch to SAP S/4HANA in 2017. The cooperation with SAP in the area of data analytics and sustainability is therefore the logical consequence for the company. 'The cloud solutions from SAP play an important role on our way to climate-friendly steel production,' says Burkhard Becker, CFO of Salzgitter AG. For example, the SAP Product Footprint Management application is intended to help reduce company-wide CO 2-To determine the footprint of Salzgitter AG, while SAP Environment Health and Safety Management supports safe and sustainable design of operational processes. With SAP Analytics Cloud, the steel producer is also setting the technological course for efficient and well-founded sustainability reporting. 'In recent years we have steadily expanded our cloud product portfolio, especially in the area of sustainability, and integrated our existing solutions. In this way, we enable our customers to achieve consistent transparency about their business processes - a basic requirement for managing sustainability goals.
