【Ferro-alloys.com】The Swedish Saab Group (SSAB) announced on Wednesday that it will cooperate with Volvo Cars to develop fossil-fuel-free steel for the automotive industry. Saab said in a statement that Volvo Cars will be the first car manufacturer to use this green steel. Volvo Cars will use this material for testing and may be used in a concept car.

Kerstin Enochsson, Volvo's global procurement director, said that for the company, this project is to reduce carbon emissions and provide more and more consumers with as sustainable cars as possible.

This steel is made of hydrogen-reduced iron powder produced in a pilot plant in Luleä, Sweden. The project is jointly operated by Saab, iron ore (1215, 4.00, 0.33%) stone producer LKAB, and utility company Vattenfall. It aims to replace coking coal (1955, -9.50, -0.48%) with hydrogen and clean energy, and save fossil Fuel is removed from the polluting steelmaking value chain. Commercial-scale production will begin in 2026.
