The total volume of iron ore dispatched to global destinations from the 19 ports and 16 mining companies in both Australia and Brazil under weekly tracking reversed down 4 million tonnes or 14.4% on week to 24 million tonnes over March 29-April 4, and both origins posted drops in shipment volumes.
The data release was delayed by one day due to the public holiday on April 5, and over the latest period, Australian iron ore shipments from its ten ports bound for global destinations slipped by 3.5 million tonnes or 16% on week to 18 million tonnes, while Brazil's shipping volume slipped by 560,000 tonnes or 8.6% on week after two weeks of rises, approximating 6 million tonnes.
Over the same period, iron ore shipments from the smaller-scale survey of 14 ports and 12 mining companies in Australia and Brazil totalled 21.3 million tonnes worldwide, which reversed down too after one-week gain, down 3.6 million tonnes or 14.5% on week.
Among the total volume in the smaller-scale survey, the tonnage from Australia to China decreased after three weeks of gains, down 2 million tonnes or 13.5% on week to 13.7 million tonnes, with all the three core miners posting on-week declines, with Rio Tinto posting the sharpest drop by 958,000 tonnes or 16.3% on week after three weeks of increases.
BHP's tonnage thinned by 821,000 tonnes or 15.2% on week after one week of rise, and Fortescue Metals Group posted an on-week drop of 168,000 tonnes or 4.8% after three weeks of gains.
As for Brazil, Vale's iron ore shipment to global destinations swelled for the second week by another 15,000 tonnes on week to 4.4 million tonnes.
A U.S.-based commodity researcher also anticipated the iron ore shipment from Vale of Brazil to increase further now that the country has exited the wet season.
