Markus Moll, managing director of Austria's SMR steel and metal market research company, said at a seminar organized by bir that the global market share of 300 series stainless steel will increase from 54.1% in 2019 to 59.3% by 2030, which means that nickel and scrap will win.

According to calculation, the global stainless steel waste flow (excluding reduction) has reached 9.8 million tons in 2019. To Markus Moll's surprise, in 2019, Europe still imported more than 250000 tons from Russia / CIS countries (an increase of 10% year-on-year), and nearly 600000 tons of stainless steel waste was transported from Europe to India (an increase of 7% year-on-year). However, according to Andre Reinders of nimomet, it is said that Jindal stainless steel, India's main stainless steel manufacturer, has promised to further reduce its dependence on imported raw materials from 65% three years ago to 35% in 2021, and its current dependence is about 45%.

Markus Moll pointed out that in 2019, China's waste rate will be only slightly higher than 20%, while Europe and the United States will exceed 70% and 80% respectively. He believes that China's available stainless steel waste is about 3 million tons per year, growing at a rate of at least 10%, and will continue to be consumed entirely in the domestic market.

Markus Moll pointed out that the combined share of China and Indonesia in global stainless steel production will continue to rise to more than 70% in 2021. However, this share is expected to stabilize later, not only because of anti-dumping and countervailing measures taken by other countries. According to Joost van kleef (Chairman of bir stainless steel and special alloys Committee) of Oryx stainless steel in the Netherlands, most stainless steel production with primary nickel as raw material has a huge negative impact on CO2 emissions.

Despite the uncertainty about the impact of the new coronavirus epidemic, Markus Moll boldly predicts that global stainless steel consumption will grow by 11% in 2021. He believes that thanks to the growth of 3% in China, the world's largest consumer of stainless steel, which consumes more than 21 million tons per year, global stainless steel consumption will only drop by 4% this year. Consumption in Europe and the United States is expected to fall by 13% in 2020, and increase by 16% and 19% in 2021, respectively. Consumption in Asia, excluding China, is expected to fall by 12% in 2020 and grow by 22% in 2021.
